Self Portrait

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” – Galatians 2:20:25

Rembrandt (1606-1669) is the only painter who left 90 self-portraits. He gradually and attentively painted the slow ruin of his own flesh. He revealed in his work, the times of skepticism and courage, melancholy and calm; all was laid open, like a confession before a priest. He also painted fantasies about himself. He painted himself as a wealthy nobleman and a flamboyant cavalier, although he was neither. By 1640, he had become the most successful artist in Amsterdam. Yet, he knew his  popularity would not last, so he painted his decline as well. After ten years, his popularity was faded. By 1652, he was bankrupt. All was captured in a moment of time with his brush.

My personal favorite self-portrait of Rembrandt is his painting of the crucifixion of Christ. He painted himself in the crowd below, identifying himself as one who crucified Jesus. Conveying the message that if he were there, he too would have fallen, like all the rest. Rembrandt was a master painter who left his impression on many.

Pastor Richard Wurmbrand was also such man who painted a self-portrait in the lives of many suffering Christians during his life. Like other pastors who were imprisoned for their faith, Richard had an agreement with his prison officials. He would preach the gospel to the other prisoners, and the officials would beat him.

Preaching in prison was absolutely forbidden. If anyone wished to share the gospel, they would pay the price – a price Pastor Wurmbrand paid many times. Of his 14 years in communist prisons, Wurmbrand wrote in his book, Tortured For Christ; “They broke four vertebrae in my back, and many other bones. They carved me in a dozen places. They burned and cut eighteen holes in my body.”  He was also refrigerated in a “cold cell,” had his teeth knocked out, was drugged and tempted, and nearly died of tuberculosis. Yet, his suffering marked those who witnessed his courage, and later heard his stories. He painted pictures with his words of those that suffer for the sake of Christ. He was truly tortured for Christ.

Pastor Wurmbrand painted his self-portrait in my own life with his many stories and insights into the Greek and Hebrew languages. He was what the Spanish call a “Contador,” a keeper of the old stories. These precious stories must be preserved for future generations to read and be encouraged.

Each of us is given the opportunity to paint a self-portrait in the lives of others, but how many of us actually pick up the brush? We can leave a mark in the lives of others and make a difference. We can be the face that someone remembers when he is down-and-out or feeling grief. We can be God’s messengers to shine the reflection of his love here on earth to the lost. We are called to it. It is our commission as children of the living God. Each of us has a canvas; a circle of influence that we are a part of, and somewhere on that picture is a portrait of each one of us. What are we doing in that big picture?

Methuselah the Oldest Recorded Person in the Bible

Methuselah was the oldest person recorded in the Bible who died. People lived longer in those days because the earth had a more like a greenhouse effect and the earth had not experienced rain before the Flood recorded in the book of Genesis. The long life of Methuselah illustrates God's incredible patience and demonstrates His longsuffering nature. When Methuselah was born, it is recorded Genesis 5 that his father Enoch began to walk with God and "for God took him." (Gen. 5:21–22). Many scholars believe that it was during this time of Methuselah’s birth that God revealed to Enoch the coming Flood to the Earth. His father Enoch spent the next three centuries warning the world around him of God's impending Judgement on all the ungodly. for their evil deeds (Jude 14-15).

Some scholars have suggested that Methuselah's name means "when he dies it shall come" or "upon his death there will be a major change." Regardless, the year Methuselah died was the same year as the Flood began.  Methuselah's name makes it ironic that he would be the one who lived the longest on the Earth, since his name actually contains the Hebrew word for death. His name can literally be translated, "He dieth, and the sending forth," If you match up the ages of the patriarchs recorded in Genesis, Methuselah died the same year as the Flood.

The word muwth means "death/die" in Hebrew. The first part of Methuselah's name means "mortal". Taking meth/muth and combining it with selah, some scholars have suggested that this signified when the Flood would come.

AND METHUSELAH LIVED 987 YEARS

"And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: Genesis 5:25. And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died."

- Genesis 5:26-27

- Psalm 71:9-12

"A gray head is a crown of glory; It is found in the way of righteousness."

“To be justified means more than to be declared “not guilty.” It actually means to be declared righteous before God. It means God has imputed or charged the guilt of our sin to His Son, Jesus Christ, and has imputed or credited Christ’s righteousness to us.”

- Jerry Bridges (1929-2016) Evangelical Christian Author

BY JUSTIFICATION WE ARE SAVED

"By justification we are saved from the guilt of sin, by sanctification we are saved from the power and root of sin"

- John Wesley (1703-1791) English Cleric and Minister

JUSTIFICATION DOES NOT CONDEMN

"There are three things which the true Christian desires in respect to sin: Justification, that it may not condemn; sanctification, that it may not rein; and glorification, that it may not be."

- Richard Cecil (1748–1810) Evangelical Anglican Clergyman

JUSTIFICATION BEFORE GOD

“It is entirely by the intervention of Christ’s righteousness that we obtain justification before God. This is equivalent to saying that man is not just in himself, but that the righteousness of Christ is communicated to him by imputation, while he is strictly deserving of punishment.”

- John Calvin (1509-1564) French Theologian

JUSTIFICATION AND ETERNAL LIFE

“Saving faith is an immediate relation to Christ, accepting, receiving, resting upon Him alone, for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of God’s grace.”

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

JUSTIFICATION IS THE GOLDEN CHAIN

“The soul is the life of the body, faith is the life of the soul, and Christ is the life of faith. Justification by faith in Christ's righteousness is the golden chain which binds the Christian world in one body.”

- James H.  Aughey (1828-1911) Imprisoned American Minister

THE GROUNDS FOR YOUR JUSTIFICATION

"The grounds of your justification are the perfect works of Jesus Christ. We're saved by works, but they're not our own."

- R. C. Sproul (1939-2017) American Reformed Theologian

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUSTIFICATION

"If you do not put a difference between justification wrought by the Man Christ without, and sanctification wrought by the Spirit of Christ within, you are not able to divide the word aright; but contrariwise, you corrupt the word of God."

- John Bunyan (1628-1688) English Minister Writer

OUR JUSTIFICATION BEFORE GOD

"We acknowledge no righteousness but what the obedience and satisfaction of Christ yields us. His blood, not our faith; his satisfaction, not our believing it, is the matter of our justification before God."

-  John Flavel (c1627-1691) English Puritan Minister

BELIEVETH ON HIM THAT JUSTIFIETH THE UNGODLY

"Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."

- Galatians 3:11

UNTO JUSTIFICATION OF LIFE

- Romans 5:18-19

FOR THE SAKE OF OUR JUSTIFICATION

NOT JUSTIFIED BY WORKS

Why God Allows Suffering

THE BACKSIDE OF THE DESERT

"It is always on the backside of the desert that we come to the mountain of God--on the backside of the of the desert of self, at the end of our own dreams and ambitions and plans. Poor Moses had made quite a come-down from the courts of Egypt to the desert of Midian. He carried in his hand only a shepherd's rod, fit symbol of his humiliation. God demanded that he cast even that to the ground.  And when he took it up again it became henceforth the "Rod of God!"

If God has brought you to the backside of the desert, if you are reduced, as it were, to a shepherd's rod, cast even that gladly at his feet and He will restore it to you the rod of God--and with it you shall work wonders in His name so long as you "endure as seeing Him Who is invisible."

- Vance Havner 1901-1986, Country Preacher, Revivalist

YOUR AFFLICTIONS ARE NOT ETERNAL

"Your afflictions are not eternal, time will end them, and so shall ye at length see the Lord's salvation; His love sleepeth not, is still in working for you; His salvation will not tarry nor linger; and suffering for Him is the noblest cross out of heaven. Your Lord hath the choice of ten thousand other crosses, beside this, to exercise you withal; but His wisdom and His love choosed out this for you, beside them all; and take it as a choice one, and make use of it. Let the Lord absolutely have the ordering of your evils and troubles, and put them off you, by recommending your cross and your furnace to Him, who hath skill to melt His own metal, and knoweth well what to do with His furnace."

- Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661) Scottish Presbyterian Pastor, Theologian

REJOICE IN THE LORD

"Though poor in this world's goods, though grieving the loss of loved ones, though suffering pain of body, though harassed by sin and Satan, though hated and persecuted by worldlings, whatever be the case and lot of the Christian, it is both his privilege and duty to rejoice in the Lord."

- A. W. Pink (1886-1952) English Bible Teacher

WE WANT TO AVOID SUFFERING

"We want to avoid suffering, death, sin, ashes. But we live in a world crushed and broken and torn, a world God Himself visited to redeem. We receive His poured-out life, and being allowed the high privilege of suffering with Him, may then pour ourselves out for others."

- Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) Christian Author and Missionary to Ecuador

GOD'S WILL IN SUFFERING

"To choose to suffer means that there is something wrong; to choose God's will even if it means suffering, is a very different thing. No healthy saint ever chooses suffering; he chooses God's will, as Jesus did, whether it means suffering or not."

- Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) Scottish Minister and Teacher

WE SUFFER TODAY, BUT WE SHALL REJOICE TOMORROW

"Our sorrows are all, like ourselves, mortal. There are no immortal sorrows for immortal souls. They come, but blessed be God, they also go. Like birds of the air, they fly over our heads. But they cannot make their abode in our souls. We suffer today, but we shall rejoice tomorrow."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher and Author

UNDERSTANDING IN THE DAY OF VISITATION

That which thou dost not understand when thou readest, thou shalt understand in the day of thy visitation; for many secrets of religion are not perceived till they be felt, and are not felt but in the day of calamity.

IF INDEED WE SUFFER WITH HIM

"And if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him."

SALVATION PERFECT THROUGH SUFFERING

Words to Think About…

CANNOT BE USELESS IN SUFFERING

"We cannot be useless while we are doing and suffering God’s will, whatever it may be found to be. And we can always do that. If we are bringing forth the fruits of the Spirit, we are not useless. And we can always do that. If we are increasing in the knowledge of God's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, we are not useless. And we can always do that. While we pray, we cannot be useless. And we can always do that. God will always find us a work to do, a niche to fill, a place to serve, nay, even a soul to save, when it is His will, and not ours, that we desire to do; and if it should please Him that we should sit still for the rest of our lives, doing nothing else but waiting on Him, and waiting for Him, why should we complain? Here is the patience of the saints."

- Anthony W. Throld (1825–1895) Anglican Bishop in the Victorian era.

IN LIGHT OF WHAT THEY MAY SUFFER

"We must learn to regard people less in light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer."

- Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1900-1940) German Christian Executed by Nazis

BLESSING OUT OF DIFFICULTY

"God will not permit any troubles to come upon us, unless He has a specific plan by which great blessing can come out of the difficulty."

- Peter Marshall (1902-1949) Scottish Preacher

GOD BRINGS MEN INTO DEEP WATER

"God brings men into deep waters not to drown them, but to cleanse them."

- James H. Aughey (1828-1911) Presbyterian Minister

TO THEIR TREMENDOUS DIFFICULTIES

"Many men owe the grandeur of their lives to their tremendous difficulties."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

MY ACCUMULATED SUFFERINGS

"If I had not felt certain that every additional trial was ordered by infinite love and mercy, I could not have survived my accumulated sufferings."

- Adoniram Judson (1788-1850) American Linguist and Missionary

BUT WHY SOME DO NOT SUFFER

"The real problem is not why some pious, humble, believing people suffer, but why some do not."

- C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) Irish Writer and Scholar

- 1 John 2:27

Who Can Bring Forth the Mazzaroth?

The Mazzaroth is the Hebrew side of the Zodiac. In Job 38, God asks Job 77 questions and one of them is "Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season?" Biblical scholars have called the Mazzaroth, the “gospel in the stars.” According to this theory, God presented His full plan for the salvation of mankind from Adam to today in the constellations.

The Mazzaroth (Hebrew Transliteration: מַזָּרוֹת Mazzārōṯ, LXX Μαζουρωθ, Mazourōth) is a Biblical Hebrew Word found in the Book of Job (38:32) and literally meaning "constellations."

How Can I Be Saved?

You’ve probably seen John 3:16 posted somewhere on a sign, written on a freeway overpass, at a concert, at a sporting event, or even read to you as a little child. This verse is a simple one. There are 20 monosyllables (single words) in the verse. The Gospel is meant to be simple for everyone!

Be sure of your Salvation. Right now, and pray this simple prayer with a sincere heart...

“Lord, forgive me for my sins. I confess that I am a sinner. Come into my heart and make me the person you created me to be. I receive your gift of pardon through Jesus dying for me on the cross to save me. – Amen”

It was once determined in a court of law that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. There is a true story about a man that refused his pardon. A judge ruled that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. When you prayed that prayer and accepted God’s pardon for your sins, you became a new creation in Christ.

The Bible teaches that you are saved by faith through Jesus. Grow in the Grace that was just given to you, seek God in His word (The Bible) and go out tell somebody!
