HIDDEN TREASURE IN THE BIBLE

"To get the full flavor of an herb, it must be pressed between the fingers, so it is the same with the Scriptures; the more familiar they become, the more they reveal their hidden treasures and yield their indescribable riches."

— John Chrysostom (347-407) Archbishop, Early Church Father

THE CHRISTIAN STUDENT

"If we are good students in the school of life, there is much that the years have to teach us. But the Christian is more than a student, more than a philosopher. He is a believer, and the object of his faith makes the difference, the mighty difference. Of all persons, the Christian should be best prepared for whatever the New Year brings. He has dealt with life at its source. In Christ, he has disposed of a thousand enemies that other men must face alone and unprepared. He can face his tomorrow cheerful and unafraid because yesterday he turned his feet into the ways of peace and today he lives in God. The man who has made God his dwelling place will always have a safe habitation."

- A. W. Tozer (1897-1963) American Christian Pastor, Author

REFUSING TO SURRENDER THE WORD OF GOD

In the year A.D. 303, the roman Emperor Diocletian issued a decree which he hoped would extinguish the spreading flames of Christianity. One of his primary objectives was the seizure and destruction of the Christian Scriptures. Later that year, officials enforced the decree in North Africa. One of the targets was Felix, Bishop of Tibjuca, a village near Carthage. The mayor of the town ordered Felix to hand over his Scriptures. Though some judges were willing to accept scraps of parchment, Felix refused to surrender the Word of God at the insistence of mere men. Resolutely, he resisted compromise. Roman authorities finally shipped Felix to Italy where he paid for his stubbornness with his life. On August 30, as the record puts it, "with pious

obstinacy," he laid down his life rather than surrender his Gospels.

SHAKING THE BIBLE

Martin Luther said he studied his Bible as he gathered apples. First, he shook the whole tree, that the ripest might fall; then he shook each limb, and when he had shaken each limb, he shook each branch, and after each branch, every twig; and then he looked under every leaf.

"First I shake the whole [apple] tree, that the ripest might fall. Then I climb the tree and shake each limb, and then each branch and then each twig, and then I look under each leaf.

D. L. MOODY ON THE SCRIPTURES

"The Scriptures were not given for our information, but for our transformation."

"The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible."

"I know the Bible is inspired because it inspires me."

"The study of God’s Word brings peace to the heart. In it, we find a light for every darkness, life in death, the promise of our Lord’s return, and the assurance of everlasting glory."

"There’s no better book with which to defend the Bible than the Bible itself."

"I never saw a useful Christian who was not a student of the Bible."

STUDY TO HAVE JOY

"Study always to have Joy, for it benefits not the servant of God to show before his brother or another sadness or a troubled face."

- St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) Italian Catholic Friar

BIBLE STUDY METAL THAT FORGES

“Bible study is the metal that forges a Christian.”

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

WHEN HE STOPS STUDYING THE BIBLE

"When a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians, the devil smiles. When he stops studying the Bible, the devil laughs. When he stops praying, the devil shouts for joy."

- Corrie Ten Boom (1892-1983) Holocaust Survivor, Christian Writer

FOR THE WORD OF GOD IS ALIVE

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

- Hebrews 4:12

A Righteous Man Regardeth the Life of His Beast

"A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." - Proverbs 12:10

SIR ISAAC NEWTON AND HIS DOG

Sir Isaac Newton's temper, it is is said, was so equal and mild, that no accident could disturb it; a remarkable instance of which is related as follows:

Sir Isaac had a favorite little dog, which he called Diamond. Being one evening called out of his study into the next room, Diamond was left behind.  When Sir Isaac returned, having been absent but a few minutes, he had the mortification to find that Diamond had overturned a lighted candle among some papers, the nearly finished labour of many years, which were soon in flames, and almost consumed to ashes. This loss, from Newton's advanced age, was irreparable; but, without punishing the dog, he exclaimed, "Oh Diamond, Diamond, you little know the mischief you have dome!"

- The Treasury of Anecdotes Moral and Religious, William P. Nimmo C.1840

HE HAD COMPASSION FOR THE ANIMALS ON NINEVAH

- Jonah 4:11

ANIMALS WILL BE USED IN HIS RETURN

"Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses."

- Revelation 19:11-14

- Psalm 50:10-11

GOD FORMED ALL THE WILD ANIMALS

"Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found."

- Genesis 2:19-20

ASK THE ANIMAL, THEY WILL TEACH YOU

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; 8 or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. 9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? 10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind."

GOD'S COVENANT WITH EVERY LIVING CREATURE

"Later, God told Noah and his sons, “Pay attention! I’m establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you—the flying creatures, the livestock, and all the wildlife of the earth that are with you—all the earth’s animals that came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you: No living beings will ever be cut off again by flood waters, and there will never again be a flood that destroys the earth.” Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow becomes visible in the clouds, I’ll remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature, so that water will never again become a flood to destroy all living beings. God also said, “Here’s the symbol that represents the covenant that I’m making between me and you and every living being with you, for all future generations: I’ve set my rainbow in the sky to symbolize the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow becomes visible in the clouds, I’ll remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature, so that water will never again become a flood to destroy all living beings.”

AS FOR HUMANS, GOD TESTS THEM

Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath ; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

THE VOICE OF THE LORD

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;

The God of glory thunders,

The Lord is over many waters.

The voice of the Lord is powerful,

The voice of the Lord is majestic.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;

es, the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,

And Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire.

The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;

The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the deer to calve

And strips the forests bare;

Mazzaroth - Libra Sep 23 - Oct 23

LIBRA (The Scales). The price deficient balanced by the price which covers.

Libra the Scales, or Altar shows the Messiah a sthe balancer of the Scales of Justice who makes all those who love Him appear perfect.

To balance these scales for all people Libra signifies Revelation’s Rider on a Black Horse, which brings famine and death in judgment. (1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 9:14-15, 12:24; Rev. 6:5).

Ancient stories from this constellation have Libra as a lamp with Scorpio shown in some ancient drawings as trying to seize the lamp.

The lamp denotes the nature of the “seed of the woman,” being positioned just beneath the feet of Virgo. Scorpio wants the lamp for himself.

Scorpio, as we shall see, represents the “seed of the serpent.” It is the first representation of the conflict between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.

Libra has been associated with justice throughout the centuries. It's symbol has often been used on buildings housing courts of law and justice.

The constellation, Libra, is attended by 3 sidereal sidepieces, which help to tell the story of the price of redemption.

The message given to Belshazzar, king of Babylon. In Daniel 5:27, Belshazzar failed to satisfy the righteous demands of God: “Thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting.” Is that not also descriptive of the human race? We are all guilty before the great Judge.

SUCH IS MAN'S NATURE

MEN SO INCORRIGIBLY LAZY

"There are men so incorrigibly lazy that no inducement that you can offer will tempt them to work; so eaten up by vice that virtue is abhorrent to them, and so inveterately dishonest that theft is to them a master passion. When a human being has reached that stage, there is only one course that can be rationally pursued. Sorrowfully, but remorselessly, it must be recognized that he has become lunatic, morally demented, incapable of self-government, and that upon him, therefore, must be passed the sentence of permanent seclusion from a world in which he is not fit to be at large."

- William Booth (1829-1912) Founder, Salvation Army

THE LAZY MAN THAT WON'T GO OUT TO WORK

Since I was afraid, I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here, take what’s yours!’ “His master answered him, ‘You evil and lazy servant! So you knew that I harvested where I haven’t planted and gathered where I haven’t scattered any seed? Then you should’ve invested my money with the bankers. When I returned, I would’ve received my money back with interest. Then the master said, ‘Take the talent from him and give it to the man who has the ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.  30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

I WENT BY THE FIELD OF THE LAZY MAN

I went by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; and there it was, wall overgrown with thorns; its surface was covered with nettles; its stone wall was broken down. When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction."

I Pray Thee, Pardon My Sin

The Man Who Rejected a Pardon

In 1833, a case was filed before the Supreme Court (United States v. Wilson, 32 U.S. 150) in which the defendant, George Wilson, was convicted of robbing the U.S. Mail in Pennsylvania and sentenced to death. Wilson's friends had influence with President Andrew Jackson and was granted a pardon. Wilson, however, refused the pardon and the Supreme Court was asked to rule on the case. After much deliberation, a decision was made that if the person does not accept the pardon, it is not in effect: The Supreme Court ruled as follows:  "A pardon is a deed, to the validity of which delivery is essential, and delivery is not complete without acceptance. It may then be rejected by the person to whom it is tendered; and if it is rejected, we have discovered no power in this court to force it upon him." Wilson refused his pardon and was hanged.

THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES

When all nature is at rest, not a leaf moving, then at evening the dew comes down -- no eye to see the pearly drops descending, no ear to hear them falling on the verdant grass -- so does the Spirit come to you who believe. When the heart is at rest in Jesus -- unseen, unheard by the world -- the Spirit comes, and softly fills the believing soul, quickening all, renewing all within."

Sickness Unto Death

"When Jesus heard that, he said, this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." - John 11:4

DR. FRANKLIN AND THE YOUNG MAN

At the time when the celebrated Dr. Franklin lay upon his death-bed, he was visited by a young man who had great respect for his judgement in all things; and having entertained doubts as to the truth of the Scriptures, he thought that this awful period afforded a suitable opportunity of consulting the doctor on this important subject. Accordingly, he introduced it in a solemn and weighty manner, inquiring of Franklin what were his sentiments as to the truth of Scriptures. On the question being put, although he was in a very weak state, and near his disease, he replied.

"Young man, my advice to you is, that you cultivate an acquaintance with, and a firm belief in, the Holy Scripture; this is your certain interest."

- Moral and Religious Anecdotes by Norman Islay Macleod C. 1850s

AN ESSENTIAL DIFFERENCE

"There is an essential difference between the decease of the godly and the death of the ungodly. Death comes to the ungodly man as a penal infliction, but to the righteous as a summons to his Father's palace. To the sinner it is an execution, to the saint an undressing from his sins and infirmities. Death to the wicked is the King of terrors. Death to the saint is the end of terrors, the commencement of glory."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher and Author

I WILL TRUST HIM

"I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow may be necessary causes of some great end, which is quite beyond us. He does nothing in vain."

- John Henry Newman (1801-1890) English Theologian and Scholar

IN SICKNESS THE SOUL BEGINS TO DRESS HERSELF FOR IMMORTALITY

"In sickness the soul begins to dress herself for immortality. And first she unties the strings of vanity that made her upper garments cleave to the world and sit uneasy."

- Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) Church of England Cleric

WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SICKNESS

"I venture to say that the greatest earthly blessing that God can give to any of us is health, with the exception of sickness. Sickness has frequently been of more use to the saints of God than health has."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

THE FREE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE

GOD REQUIRES THAT HIS GIFTS SHOULD BE SOUGHT FOR

"Prayer is not appointed for the furnishing of God with the knowledge of what we need, but it is designed as a confession to Him of our sense of the need. WHICH REQUIRES FAITH IN GOD

"In Shansi I found Chinese Christians who were accustomed to spend time in fasting and prayer. They recognized that this fasting, which so many dislike, which requires faith in God, since it makes one feel weak and poorly, is really a Divinely appointed means of grace. Perhaps the greatest hindrance to our work is our own imagined strength; and in fasting we learn what poor, weak creatures we are-dependent on a meal of meat for the little strength which we are so apt to lean upon."

Words to Think About…

YOUR WORD IS A LAMP TO GUIDE ME

“Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.”

- Psalm 119:105

ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY GOD

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

AS SHOWN TO US IN SCRIPTURE

"There is only one way to be revived and healed from our backslidings so that we may become fruitful even in old age. We must take a steady look at the glory of Christ in His special character, in His grace and work, as shown to us in the Scripture."

- John Owen (1616-1683) English Nonconformist Church Leader

ALL SCRIPTURE IS GOD-BREATHED

HIS WORD STANDS FOREVER

THE WORD OF GOD

The "words" of God and the "Word" of God stand together; to separate them is to render both powerless. Any expounder of the words of God is liable to go off on a tangent if he or she does not remember this stern, undeviating standard of exposition, namely, that no individual experience is of the remotest value unless it is up to the standard of the Word of God. The Bible not only tests experience, it tests truth. The Bible tests all experience, all truth, all authority by our Lord Himself and our relationship to Him personally."

- Oswald Chambers (1874–1917) Scottish Evangelist and Teacher

THE TESTIMONY OF SCRIPTURE

"The testimony of scripture is so plain that to add anything were superfluous, were it not that the world is almost now come to that blindness, that whatsoever pleases not the princes and the multitude, the same is rejected as doctrine newly forged, and is condemned for heresy."

- John Knox (1514-1572) Scottish Minster, Theologian

I HAVE STORED UP YOUR WORD

How Can I Be Saved?

You’ve probably seen John 3:16 posted somewhere on a sign, written on a freeway overpass, at a concert, at a sporting event, or even read to you as a little child. This verse is a simple one. There are 20 monosyllables (single words) in the verse. The Gospel is meant to be simple for everyone!

Be sure of your Salvation. Right now, and pray this simple prayer with a sincere heart...

“Lord, forgive me for my sins. I confess that I am a sinner. Come into my heart and make me the person you created me to be. I receive your gift of pardon through Jesus dying for me on the cross to save me. – Amen”

It was once determined in a court of law that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. There is a true story about a man that refused his pardon. A judge ruled that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. When you prayed that prayer and accepted God’s pardon for your sins, you became a new creation in Christ.

The Bible teaches that you are saved by faith through Jesus. Grow in the Grace that was just given to you, seek God in His word (The Bible) and go out tell somebody!
