We Are Hard Pressed on Every Side, But Not Crushed

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair." - 2 Corinthians 4:8

I PRESS ON TOWARD THE GOAL FOR THE PRIZE

"I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

- Philippians 3:14

PRESS FORWARD. DO NOT STOP

"Press forward. Do not stop, do not linger in your journey, but strive for the mark set before you."

- George Whitefield (1714-1770) Church of England Evangelist

HE WILL PRESS FORWARD IN FRONT

"Is the Son of God praying in me, or am I dictating to Him?... Prayer is not simply getting things from God, that is a most initial form of prayer; prayer is getting into perfect communion with God. If the Son of God is formed in us by regeneration, He will press forward in front of our common sense and change our attitude to the things about which we pray."

- Oswald Chambers (1874–1917) Scottish Evangelist and Teacher

I AM HARD PRESSED BETWEEN THE TWO

"I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better."

- Philippians 1:23

I PRESS ON TO MAKE IT MY OWN

"Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own."

- Philippians 3:12

SHE PRESSED HIM HARD WITH HER WORDS

"And when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death."

- Judges 16:16

DO NOT BE CONFORMED TO THE WORLD

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

- Romans 12:2

RUN THE RACE OF ENDURANCE

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."

- Hebrews 12:11

Words to Think About

MY PEACE I GIVE UNTO YOU

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

- John 14:27

WAIT AND PRESS AND PRAY

"It is hard to wait and press and pray, and hear no voice, but stay till God answers."

- E. M. Bounds (1835–1913) American Clergyman, Author

PRESSING ANGER PRODUCES STRIFE

"For pressing milk produces curds, pressing the nose produces blood, and pressing anger produces strife."

- Proverbs 30:33

THE CROWN WAS PRESSING IN

"On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret."

- Luke 5:1

LET US NOT GROW WEARY

"And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."

- Galatians 6:9

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

"Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses."

1 Timothy 6:12

A GOOD MEASURE PRESSED DOWN

"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

- Luke 6:38

The Unknown Benefactor

A young man was stopped in a dark and narrow street by one who demanded his money or his life. His courageous and feeling heart at once distinguished the voice of misery from that crime, and he felt that he had before him a miserable fellow-creature whom he could receive.

"What is it you, unhappy man?" said he, in a commanding tone.

"Nothing, sir," replied the other, sobbing; "I seek nothing."

"Who are you? and what is your business?"

"I am a poor shoemaker, and I am unable to support my wife and for children."

"But are you speaking the truth?"  said the other (feeling pretty sure, however, that it was the truth).

"Where do you live?"

"In such a street, in the house of a baker."

"Come, let us see."

The shoemaker, subdued by his tones of authority, led the young man to the house. There was only a woman in the shop when they arrived.

"Do you know this man?" asked the stranger.

"Yes, sir; he is the shoemaker, who lives in the fifth story, and who has great difficulty in supporting his numerous family."

"Why do you let him want for bread?"

"Sir, we are young people, newly set up in business; we cannot advance much money, and my husband will not let me give this man credit for more than twenty-four hours."

"Give him two loaves. Here, take these loaves, and go up-stairs."

The shoemaker obeyed in great agitation.  When they entered the room, his wife and children eagerly devoured the food which was brought to them.  The young man had seen enough. He departed, leaving money with the baker's wife, and ordered her to provide the family with bread.  Some days later he returned and bidding the poor shoemaker follow him, he brought him to a shop well furnished with all the tools and implements belonging to his trade.

"Would you be an honest and contented man if this shop were yours?"

"Ah, sir, indeed I should."

After a few necessary preliminaries, the shoemaker was installed in the shop.

The author of this striking act of charity is a young man of twenty-seven, noted for piety. It is said that the establishment of this shoemaker cost him between three and four thousand francs.  His name is not known, and no one has yet succeeded in discovering who he is.

- Anecdotes and Incidents, Ecclesiastical and Religious. Burns & Lambert 1858

What I like about this story is that it records a great deed of kindness done by anonymous man to another anonymous man hundreds of years ago. We will never know the names of these men in this life, but God what transpired in the lives of these men for His divine purpose.

Did God use this act of kindness for the poor shoemaker? The Breadmaker's husband? The unknown benefactor?, the writer that recorded this story?, or perhaps He was providing provision for one of the shoemaker's children that would grow up and do some great future work in God's plan. Perhaps this act of kindness was done for you to see so many years later to help a poor shoemaker that comes across your path today. This story illustrates how a good deed that you do in this life can reach out beyond your living years.

IN ALL MY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE LORD

"In all of my years of service to my Lord, I have discovered a truth that has never failed and has never been compromised. That truth is that it is beyond the realm of possibilities that one has the ability to out give God. Even if I give the whole of my worth to Him, He will find a way to give back to me much more than I gave."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

THE HEART OF A GIVER

No Temptation Has Overtaken You

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13

AND HE SAID UNTO THE WOMAN, YE HATH GOD SAID?

“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” - Genesis 3:1

WHEN CHRISTIANS FIND THEMSELVES EXPOSED TO TEMPTATION

“When Christians find themselves exposed to temptation they should pray to God to uphold them, and when they are tempted they should not be discouraged. It is not a sin to be tempted; the sin is to fall into temptation.”

- D. L. Moody (1837-1899) American Evangelist, Teacher and Preacher

RESIST HIM, STANDING FIRM IN THE FAITH

“Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

- 1 Corinthians 7:2

YOU CAN BE A SLAVE TO SIN

“Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.”

- Romans 6:16

A COMMON TEMPTATION OF SATAN

"It is a common temptation of Satan to make us give up the reading of the Word and prayer when our enjoyment is gone; as if it were of no use to read the Scriptures when we do not enjoy them, and as if it were no use to pray when we have no spirit of prayer."

- George Mueller 1805-1898) English Evangelist and Helper of Orphans

RESIST THE DEVIL AND HE WILL FLEE FROM YOU

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

- James 4:7

DO NOT GRATIFY THE DESIRES OF THE FLESH

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”

- Galatians 5:16-17

OUR STRUGGLE IS NOT AGAINST FLESH

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

- Ephesians 6:12

SOMEHOW THE TEMPTER HAD TEMPTED YOU

“For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.”

- 1 Thessalonians 3:5

FALL AWAY WHEN FACING TEMPTATION

“The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation.”

- Luke 8:13

WATCH YOURSELF, OR YOU MAY ALSO BE TEMPTED

“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.”

- Galatians 6:1

TO TEMPT ANOTHER IS WORSE

"To tempt another is worse than to sin thyself. When you tempt, you do that which you cannot undo with your repentance."

- William Gurnall (1616-1679) English Anglican Clergyman

JESUS WAS TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL

“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. The tempter came to Him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Jesus answered him, It is also written: ‘do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

NOT COUNT TEMPTATION AS STRANGE

"We must not count temptation a strange thing. 'The disciple is not greater than his master, nor the servant than his lord. If Satan came to Christ, he will also come to Christians."

Words to Think About…

THE SIN THAT SO EASILY ENTAGLES

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

- Hebrews 12:1-2

BUT EACH PERSON IS TEMPTED

“But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.”

- James 1:13-14

TEMPTATION MAY EVEN BE A BLESSING

“Temptation may even be a blessing to a man when it reveals to him his weakness and drives him to the almighty Savior. Do not be surprised, then, dear child of God, if you are tempted at every step of your earthly journey, and almost beyond endurance; but you will not be tempted beyond what you are able to bear, and with every temptation there will be a way of escape.”

- F. B. Meyer (1847-1929) Baptist Pastor and Evangelist

TEMPTATIONS OF THE WICKED ONE

“The riches of His free grace cause me daily to triumph over all the temptations of the wicked one, who is very vigilant, and seeks all occasions to disturb me.”

 - George Whitefield (1714-1770) Church of England Evangelist

AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION

“Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.”

- Luke 11:4

ALL GREAT TEMPTATIONS

“All the great temptations appear first in the region of the mind and can be fought and conquered there. We have been given the power to close the door of the mind. We can lose this power through disuse or increase it by use, by the daily discipline of the inner man in things which seem small and by reliance upon the word of the Spirit of truth. It is God that worketh in you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure. It is as though He said, ‘Learn to live in your will, not in your feelings.”

- Amy Carmichael (1867-1951) Irish Christian Missionary in India

DELIVER YOU IN ANY TEMPTATION

“Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment.”

 - 2 Peter 2:9

BE ALERT AND OFSOBER MIND

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

- 1 Peter 5:8

TEMPTATION EXCERIZES OUR FAITH

"Temptation exercises our faith and teaches us to pray."

 - A. B. Simpson (1843-1919) Canadian Preacher, Theologian

SATAN TEMPTS GOD'S CHILDREN

Satan doth not tempt God's children because they have sin in them, but because they have grace in them. Had they no grace, the devil would not disturb them... Though to be tempted is a trouble, yet to think why you are tempted is a comfort."

- Thomas Watson (1620-1686), Puritan Preacher

Except the Lord Builds a House

"Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain." - Psalm 127:1

A GOD THAT KNOWS HIS CREATION

"He telleth the the numbers of the stars; He calleth the stars by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: His understanding is infinite"

- Psalm 147:4,5

Astronomers today tell us that there may be more than 200 billion universes. That is quite a staggering number isn't it? If you were to count to 100 for each minute, of each hour, of each day, for 19 years, you will have counted to just "one" billion.

There is a star, actually a "super giant" star called "Anteres." Think about this. Anteres is 390 times the size of the sun. That is 1.25 million times the size of our earth. If you were to take a hollow rubber ball and let it represent Anteres, and then you were to slice this rubber ball in half, this is what you could put inside it: Venus, Mercury, Mars, and the Earth, all could fit inside Anteres and continue their orbits around the sun, which you could also put inside the rubber ball. And as these planets could continue in their orbits around the sun they would never touch the inside of the rubber ball. Anteres can be seen in the constellation Scorpio, low on the summer horizon. Anteres is just one of the many stars that He calls by name.

There are some stars that are 2000 times the size of the sun in our universe. Daniel 12:3 tells us, "And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever." The stars are innumerable, each one unique, each one with a divine purpose, just like you are in His sight. We can never reach them in this life, but in our glorified bodies, we shall have endless time to explore the infinite heavens. Heed the advice of Amos 5:8, "Seek Him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the faces of the earth: The Lord is His Name."

THEY PASS THEMSELVES BY WONDERING

"People travel to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars.... and they pass by themselves without wondering."

- St. Augustine (354-430_ Theologian and Philosopher

IMAGE OF CHRIST FORMING WITHIN US

"The Image of Christ that is forming within us--that is life's one charge. Let every project stand aside for that. 'Till Christ be formed,' no man's work is finished, no religion crowned, no life has fulfilled its end. Is the infinite task begun? When, how, are we to be different? Time cannot change men. Death cannot change men. Christ can. Wherefore PUT ON CHRIST."

- Henry Drummond (1851-1897) Scottish Evangelist, Biologist

I COUNTED DOLLARS

I counted dollars, while God counted crosses,

I counted gains, while He counted losses,

I counted my worth by the things in store,

But He sized me up by the scars that I bore,

I coveted honors and sought for degrees,

He wept as He counted the hours on my knees,

I never knew till a day by a grave,

how vain are the things that we try to save,

I did not know till a friend went above,

that richest is he, that is riches in God's Love.

Words to Think About…

BY WISDOM A HOUSE IS BUILT

"By wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established."

- Proverbs 24:3

A GOD THAT IS WELL DEFINED

"A God that is well defined, is not a very Big God"

- French proverb

IF YOUR VISION DOESN'T SCARE YOU

"If your vision doesn't scare you, then both your vision and your God are too small."

- Brother Andrew (1928-2022) Dutch Christian Missionary

THE SIGNATURE OF THE HOLY GHOST

"It is the signature of the Holy Ghost upon our work and witness that makes all the difference."

- Duncan Campbell (1898-1972) Scottish Evangelist

100 YEARS FROM NOW

It will not make any difference friend,
a hundred years from now,
if you live in a stately mansion
or a floating river scow;

If the close you wear are tailor made,
or put together somehow,
if you eat big steaks, or beans and cakes
a hundred years from now,

It won't matter your bank account,
or what make of car you drive,
for the grave will claim all your riches and fame,
and the things for which you strive,

There's a deadline we all must meat,
and no one will show up late,
it won't matter all the places you've been,
each one will keep that date,

We will only have in eternity
what we give away on earth,
when we go to the grave
we can only save the things of eternal worth,

What matters friend the earthly gain
for which some men will bow,
for your destiny will be sealed you see,
a hundred years from now.

The lion signifies Christ as the victorious Kings of kings, and the conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah.

Leo represents His enemies destroyed, Messiah the Victor.

Leo represents the Lion, the triumph of the Redeemer.

And one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, overcame to open the scroll and to loosen its seven seals.” Revelation 5:5

Longest Prayer in the Bible

The longest prayer in the Bible is Nehemiah's prayer recorded in Nehemiah 9:5-38, having 1,213 words and 5,571 characters.

MISUNDERSTOOD OLD MISER

An old man, of the name of Guyot, lived and died in the town of Marseilles, in France. He amassed a large fortune by the most laborious industry, and the severest habits of abstinence and privation. His neighbors considered him a miser, and thought that he was hoarding up money from mean and avaricious motives. The populous pursued him whenever he appeared with hootings and execrations, and the boys sometimes threw stones at him. He at length died, and in his will were found the following words:

"Having observed from my infancy that the poor of Marseilles are ill-supplied with water, which can only be purchased at a great price, I have cheerfully laboured the whole of my life to procure for them this great blessing; and I direct that the whole of my property shall be laid out in building an aqueduct for their use."

GOD'S PURPOSE AND OUR PRAYERS

"Can we believe that God ever really modifies His action in response to the suggestions of men?  For infinite wisdom does not need telling what is best, and infinite goodness needs no urging to do it.  But neither does God need any of those things that are done by finite agents, whether

living or inanimate.  He could, if He chose, repair our bodies miraculously without food; or give us food without the aid of farmers, bakers, and butchers, or knowledge without the aid of learned men; or convert the heathen without missionaries.  Instead, He allows soils and weather and animals and the muscles, minds, and wills of men to cooperate in the execution of His will...  It is not really stranger, nor less strange, that my prayers should affect the course of events than that my other actions should do so.  They have not advised or changed God' s mind-- that is, His overall purpose.  But that purpose will be realized in different ways according to the actions, including the prayers, of His creatures."

- From "The Efficacy of Prayer", by C. S. Lewis

A GREAT MANY PEOPLE DO NOT PRAY

"A great many people do not pray because they do not feel any sense of need. The sign that the Holy Spirit is in us is that we realize that we are empty, not that we are full. We have a sense of absolute need. We come across people who try us, circumstances that are difficult, conditions that are perplexing, and all these things awaken a dumb sense of need, which is a sign that the Holy Spirit is there. If we are ever free from the sense of need, it is not because the Holy Spirit has satisfied us, but because we have been satisfied with as much as we have. ‘A man's reach should exceed his grasp.’ A sense of need is one of the greatest benedictions because it keeps our life rightly related to Jesus Christ."

- Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) Scottish Evangelist

REGARDLESS OF WHETHER WE PRAY

"The idea that everything would happen exactly as it does regardless of whether we pray or not is a specter that haunts the minds of many who sincerely profess belief in God. It makes prayer psychologically impossible, replacing it with dead ritual at best."

- David Brainard (1718-1747) American Missionary to Native Indians

THE HIGHEST KIND OF PRAYER

"Every kind of prayer, not intercessory prayer only, which is the highest kind of prayer, but all prayer, from the lowest kind to the highest, is impossible in a life of known and allowed sin."

- Alexander Whyte (11836-1921) Scottish Preacher

HELPING US THROUGH YOUR PRAYERS

"You also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many."

- 2 Corinthians 1:11

WITH ALL PRAYER AND PETITION

"With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints."

 - Ephesians 6:18

PRAYERS ON BEHALF OF ALL MEN

Words to Think About on Prayer...

TRIALS TEACH US WHAT WE ARE

"Trials teach us what we are; they dig up the soil, and let us see what we are made of."

Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Preacher

BEFORE WE PRAY

"Before we pray that God would fill us, I believe we ought to pray Him to empty us."

– D.L. Moody, Secret Power, - D. L. Moody (1837-1899) American Evangelist

NO BETTER ADVANTAGE THAN TO PRAY

"You can use your time to no better advantage than to pray whenever you have a moment, either alone, or with others, while at work, at rest, or walking down the street! Anywhere!"

- Ole Hallesby (1879-1961) Norwegian Theologian and Author

EARLY ON THEIR KNEES

"The men who have done the most for God in this world have been early on their knees. He who fritters away the early morning, its opportunity and freshness, in other pursuits than seeking God will make poor headway seeking Him the rest of the day. If God is not first in our thoughts and efforts in the morning, He will be in the last place the remainder of the day."

 - E. M. Bounds (1835-1913) American Preacher

THE POWER OF PREVAILING PRAYER

"There is no power like that of prevailing prayer, of Abraham pleading for Sodom, Jacob wrestling in the stillness of the night, Moses standing in the breach, Hannah intoxicated with sorrow, David heartbroken with remorse and grief, Jesus in sweat of blood. Add to this list from the records of the church your personal observation and experience, and always there is the cost of passion unto blood. Such prayer prevails. It turns ordinary mortals into men of power. It brings power. It brings fire. It brings rain. It brings life. It brings God."

 - Samuel Chadwick (1860-1932) English Preacher

INTERCESSION FOR MEN

"Our prayer must not be self-centered. It must arise not only because we feel our own need as a burden we must lay upon God, but also because we are so bound up in love for our fellow men that we feel their need as acutely as our own. To make intercession for men is the most powerful and practical way in which we can express our love for them."

- John Calvin (1509-1564) French Theologian

EARNEST PRAYER

"Earnest intercession will be sure to bring love with it. I do not believe you can hate a man for whom you habitually pray. If you dislike any brother Christian, pray for him doubly, not only for his sake, but for your own, that you may be cured of prejudice and saved from all unkind feeling."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

You Have An Anointing From the Holy One

"But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know." - 1 John 2:20

THE ANOINTING WHICH YOU RECEIVED FROM HIM

"As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him."

- 1 John 2:27

ANOINTING OF CHRISTIANS

"Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God."

JESUS OF NAZARETH, HOW GOD ANOINTED

"You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him."

- Acts 10:38

DIVINE ANOINTING BY WHICH WE ARE ENABLED

"Our Lord Jesus differs from all other teachers; they reach the ear, but he instructs the heart; they deal with the outward letter, but he imparts an inward taste for the truth, by which we perceive its Saviour and spirit. The most unlearned of men become ripe scholars in the school of grace when the Lord Jesus by his Holy Spirit unfolds the mysteries of the kingdom to them, and grants the divine anointing by which they are enabled to behold the invisible."

— Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

A MAN WORKING WITHOUT THIS ANOINTING

"There is no use in running before you are sent; there is no use in attempting to do God's work without God's power. A man working without this unction, a man working without this anointing, a man working without the Holy Ghost upon him, is losing time after all."

- D. L. Moody (1837-1899) American Evangelist, Teacher and Preacher

ANOINT YOUR EYES SO THAT YOU MAY SEE

"I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see."

- Revelation 3:18

GOD HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH OIL OF GLADNESS

"But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”

- Hebrews 1:9

THE LORD SAVES HIS ANOINTED

"Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand. Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God."

- Psalm 20:6-7

Old anointings will not suffice to impart unction to thy spirit; thine head must have fresh oil poured upon it from the golden horn of the sanctuary, or it will cease from its glory."

 - Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

ANOINTED THE FEET OF JESUS

"Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume."

- John 12:3

FRESH ANOINTING AND FRESH POWER

“I believe this is a mistake a great many of us are making; we are trying to do God's work with the grace God gave us ten years ago. We say, if it is necessary, we will go on with the same grace. Now, what we want is a fresh supply, a fresh anointing and fresh power, and if we seek it, and seek it with all our hearts, we will obtain it.”

- D. L. Moody (1837-1899) American Evangelist, Teacher and Preacher

Prayer Doesn't Have a Shelf Life

WHEN YOU GO TO PRAYER

When you go to prayer, your first thought must be: The father is in secret, the Father waits for me there. Just because your heart is cold and prayerless, get you into the presence of the loving Father. As a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth you. Do not be thinking of how little you have to bring God, but of how much He wants to give you. Just place yourself before Him and look up into His face; think of His love, His wonderful, tender, pitying love. Tell Him how sinful and cold and dark all is; it is the Father's loving heart will give light and warmth to yours."

- Andrew Murray (1828-1917) Dutch Minister, Writer, Preacher

PRAYER AND COMMUNICATING WITH GOD

"If God has left some things contingent on man's thinking and working, why may He not have left some things contingent on man's praying? The testimony of the great souls is a clear affirmative to this: some things never without thinking; some things never without working; some things never without praying! Prayer is one of the three forms of man's cooperation with God."

- Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) in The Meaning of Prayer, American Pastor

PRAYER AND LIFE'S CRITICAL BATTLES

"It is in the field of prayer that life's critical battles are lost or won. We must conquer all our circumstances there. We must first of all bring them there. We must survey them there. We must master them there. In prayer we bring our spiritual enemies into the Presence of God and we fight them there. Have you tried that? Or have you been satisfied to meet and fight your foes in the open spaces of the world?"

- J. H. Jowett (1864-1923) British Preacher

DELAYED PRAYER

"None can believe how powerful prayer is, and what it is able to effect, but those who have learned it by experience. It is a great matter when in extreme need to take hold on prayer. In this struggle, too, the decisive factor is the Spirit of prayer."

On Bitterness

"Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness spring up to trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; " - Hebrews 12:15

Bitterness is prominent in the body of Christ today. Bitterness at its core is unbelief. Feeling like God could have done something differently; or questions like; Why am alone? Why am I overlooked?  Why am I suffering? Thinking thoughts like; I deserve more than this and God doesn't care about me will bring bitterness to those who dwell on life through this lens. Many Christians fall away do to bitterness. God has a purpose for the things that cause you bitterness. Look for His eternal purpose when feelings of bitterness rise up within you.

The word used for "bitterness" in this passage is "pikria", pronounced, "pik-ree'-ah"  The KJV translates Strong's G4088 in the following manner: bitterness (4x). as; bitter gall,  extreme wickedness, a bitter root, and so producing a bitter fruit metaph. bitterness, bitter hatred.

TOO MANY CHRISTIANS BECOME BITTER

"Too many Christians become bitter and angry in the conflict. If we descend into hatefulness, we have already lost the battle. We must cooperate with God in turning what was meant for evil into a greater good within us. This is why we bless those who would curse us: It is not only for their sakes but to preserve our own soul from its natural response toward hatred."

- Francois Fenelon (1651-1715) French Catholic Archbishop

OUR SUFFERINGS WILL LOSE THEIR BITTERNESS

"The sorest afflictions never appear intolerable, but when we see them in the wrong light; when we see them in the hand of God, who dispenses them; when we know that it is our loving Father who abases and distresses us; our sufferings will lose their bitterness and become even a matter of consolation."

- Brother Lawrence (1611-1691) Lay Monk in Paris

UNBELIEF STARVES THE SOUL

"Faith makes all evil good to us, and all good better; unbelief makes all good evil, and all evil worse. Faith laughs at the shaking of the spear; unbelief trembles at the shaking of a leaf, unbelief starves the soul; faith finds food in famine, and a table in the wilderness. In the greatest danger, faith says, "I have a great God." When outward strength is broken, faith rests on the promises. In the midst of sorrow, faith draws the sting out of every trouble, and takes out the bitterness from every affliction."

- Richard Cecil (1748–1810) Evangelical Anglican Clergyman

MAN MAY TURN BITTER AND CROTCHETY

"Nothing can alter the character of God. In the course of a human life, tastes and outlook and temper may change radically: a kin, equable man may turn bitter and crotchety: a man of good-will may grow cynical and callous. But nothing of this sort happens to the Creator."

Why Did Jesus Refer to People as Sheep?

"Therefore, I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand." - Matthew 13:13

References to sheep are found throughout the entire Bible. Sheep were often used as sacrificial animals (Numbers 28:4; Exodus 29:39). They were also a primary source of income in Biblical times as well as today. Sheep are also used symbolically to represent God’s people (Matthew 25:32). The Bible even refers to Jesus Christ as the “Lamb of God” that takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:19).

ALL WE LIKE SHEEP HAVE GONE ASTRAY

"All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, everyone, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

- Isaiah 53:6

10 THINGS COMMON TO SHEEP

Sheep have no sense of direction.

Sheep follow others blindly.

Sheep are not meant to carry burdens.

Sheep will settle for less.

Sheep are defenseless.

Sheep can’t get up without help.

Sheep are valuable.

Sheep are innocent.

Sheep can not care for themselves when wounded.

Sheep are emotional and recognize the shepherd’s voice.

SO I SACRAFICE MY LIFE FOR THE SHEEP

"Just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep."

- John 10:15

THE GOOD SHEPHERD LAYS DOWN HIS LIFE

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."

- John 10:10-11

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever."

- Psalm 23

THE SHEPHERD IS FAR MORE WILLING

"Experience has taught me that the Shepherd is far more willing to show His sheep the path than the sheep are to follow. He is endlessly merciful, patient, tender, and loving. If we, His stupid and wayward sheep, really want to be led, we will without fail be led. Of that I am sure."

- Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) Christian Missionary and Writer

MY SHEEP LISTEN TO MY VOICE

"But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me."

- John 10:26-28

HE TENDS HIS FLOCK LIKE A SHEPHERD

- Isaiah 40:10-11

BELIEVERS ARE NOT COMPARED TO BEARS OR LIONS

"Some Christians try to go to heaven alone, in solitude. But believers are not compared to bears or lions or other animals that wander alone. Those who belong to Christ are sheep in this respect, that they love to get together. Sheep go in flocks, and so do God's people."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

YOU ARE MY FLOCK, THE SHEEP OF MY PASTURE

 - Ezekiel 34:30-31

THE SHEPHERD SEPERATES THE SHEEP FROM THE GOATS

"All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. THE PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP

He told them this parable. "Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn't leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it? When he has found it, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing. When he comes home, he calls together his friends, his family and his neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!' I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance."

ALL BESIDES IS BUT FOLLY AND VANITY

"Let us think often that our only business in this life is to please God. Perhaps all besides is but folly and vanity."

- Brother Lawrence (1611-1691) Lay Monk in Paris

MADE US SEE THE VANITY OF IT

"Whatsoever we have over-loved, idolized, and leaned upon, God has from time to time broken it, and made us to see the vanity of it; so that we find the readiest course to be rid our comforts is to set our hearts inordinately or immoderately upon them."

FILLED UP WITH VANITY AND FOLLY

"Those years, months, weeks, days, and hours, that are not filled up with God, with Christ, with grace, and with duty, will certainly be filled up with vanity and folly. The neglect of one day, of one duty of one hour, would undo us, if we had not an Advocate with the Father."

- Thomas Brooks (1608-1680) Puritan Preacher and Writer

DRAW THEE OUT THE VANITY

"When therefore the first spark of a desire after God arises in thy soul, cherish it with all thy care, give all thy heart into it; it is nothing less than a touch of the divine loadstone, that is to draw thee out of the vanity of time, into the riches of eternity."

- William Law (1686-1761) Church of England Cleric

IF IT BE WITHOUT VANITY

"Great knowledge, if it be without vanity, is the most severe bridle of the tongue. For so have I heard that all the noises and prating of the pool, the croaking of frogs and toads, are hushed and appeased upon the bringing upon them the light of a candle or torch. Every beam of reason and ray of knowledge checks the dissolution of the tongue."

- Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) Church of England Cleric

SPENT MY STRENGTH FOR VANITY

But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God.”

- Isaiah 49:4

The Proverbs 31 Woman

1The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Words to Think About…

THE WORK OF THE ALMIGHTY HAND

"I do when I have had happier times in my soul, than when I have been sitting at work, with nothing before me but a candle and a white cloth, and hearing no sound but that of my own beath, with God in my soul and heaven in my eye, I rejoice in being exactly what I am, - a creature capable of loving God, and who, as long as God lives, must be happy.  I get up and look for a while out of the window, and gaze at the moon and starts., the work of the Almighty hand.  I think of the grandeur of the universe, and then sit down, and think to myself one of the happiest beings in it."

- A Poor Methodist Woman, 18th Century

- 1 Timothy 3:11

36,000 ATTENDED HER FUNERAL

Catherine Booth (1829-1890) and her husband William founded The Salvation Army in 1865 in their home country, England. Together they raised eight dedicated Christian children and preached the Gospel worldwide. Intent on saving others to the end Catherine stepped out boldly in ways that many women (even in our day) are reluctant to go. And in the Army William and Catherine led, men and women worked side by side for the salvation of the world. Her life made such an impression that at her death over 50,000 people flocked to Congress Hall in London to pay tribute to the "Mother of the Salvation Army.' More than 36,000 attended her funeral, and at the invitation to give their hearts to God, hundreds rose to their feet.

How Can I Be Saved?

You’ve probably seen John 3:16 posted somewhere on a sign, written on a freeway overpass, at a concert, at a sporting event, or even read to you as a little child. This verse is a simple one. There are 20 monosyllables (single words) in the verse. The Gospel is meant to be simple for everyone!

Be sure of your Salvation. Right now, and pray this simple prayer with a sincere heart...

“Lord, forgive me for my sins. I confess that I am a sinner. Come into my heart and make me the person you created me to be. I receive your gift of pardon through Jesus dying for me on the cross to save me. – Amen”

It was once determined in a court of law that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. There is a true story about a man that refused his pardon. A judge ruled that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. When you prayed that prayer and accepted God’s pardon for your sins, you became a new creation in Christ.

The Bible teaches that you are saved by faith through Jesus. Grow in the Grace that was just given to you, seek God in His word (The Bible) and go out tell somebody!
